Not for the faint of heart
Be prepared to go on an excruciating journey with this French Canadian made film. This is possibly one of the most violent and thought provoking films I have every seen. It took me just over two days to fully digest this movie. This movie is on so many top horror lists that I do agree its a must watch, but only for those that may be able to handle the violent nature of this film.
This movie will draw you in from the very beginning and completely change course half way through the film. There is some very real looking and disturbing violence in this film, I am not a squeamish person and there were moments I still had to avert my eyes.
I've avoided the remake of this film as I have heard that they changed the ending, and to me the ending of this film is the entire point of the film so changing it, to me would change the entire impact of the film, and the impact is great, so I would recommend watching the original first. They offer a dubbed version for those who cannot do subtitles.
The questions raised by the end of the film and the open ended conclusion is done in the best way possible in my opinion, and is the basis for a lot of great theories and discussions I guarantee you will want to have with other viewers after seeing this film.
If you cannot stomach torture, then this is not a film for you. Upon first viewing I did not think I would be able to, or want to see this movie again, but after fully digesting it, figuring out my stance on the ending, I really think it is a masterpiece of horror and one of if not the best in the New French Extremity genre.
